Split Flanker Close is a 20 personnel Shotgun set that puts two backs in the gun alongside the quarterback while condensing the receiver spacing. You get a halfback offset next to the QB and a fullback or second back aligned in the backfield, with the flanker tightened down near the numbers and the split end isolated on the opposite side. That compression is the whole point: it shrinks the throwing windows the defense wants to sit in, forces linebackers and safeties to declare their run fits closer to the box, and leaves the isolated X receiver on an island where you can win one on one without help defenders in the picture.
The difference between this and standard Shotgun spread sets is that you are not asking the defense to defend width, you are asking it to defend a heavy box while still covering vertical stems from tight alignments. Base defenses stay on the field because the personnel reads as a run look, which means you are throwing X Dig and WR Corner at linebackers and slower safeties instead of nickel corners. The two back alignment also gives you real protection help, so seven man pressures get picked up and you can hold your progression on the deeper concepts.
Concept wise this set covers the full menu. Inside Zone Lt and HB Power O give you downhill run identity with an extra blocker, Read Option and the RPO tagged looks let you punish overcommitting edge defenders, and HB Draw is a legitimate answer when opponents start dropping eight. In the pass game, Pivot Dig and DBL Ins attack the middle of zone coverage while Drag HB Wheel is one of the better man beaters in the game: the drag clears the flat defender and the wheel out of the backfield puts a linebacker in a footrace he cannot win.
Use this set on second and medium and third and short where the defense has to respect the run, then hit Drag HB Wheel or WR Corner while linebackers are keying the backfield.
Read the safety count pre snap: single high means go to X Dig or WR Corner on the isolated side, two high means work Pivot Dig and DBL Ins into the vacated middle.
Motion the flanker across to widen the split and identify man versus zone, then check into HB Power O or Inside Zone Lt if the defender travels and the box lightens.
Hot route the second back to a flat or angle route when you see six or more in the box, it gives you an immediate checkdown against blitz and keeps the pocket clean.
Establish Inside Zone Lt and HB Power O early so HB Draw and Read Option become real threats later, and save Drag HB Wheel for a key third down when the opponent is in man.
