HB Power O out of Shotgun Split Flanker Close is a gap scheme run play built to pull a blocker across the formation and create a numbers advantage at the point of attack. The diagram shows the frontside guard and playside blockers down blocking while a puller wraps around to lead through the hole, with the HB taking the handoff and pressing the mesh point before cutting off the puller's block. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read is the HB reading the puller's block to decide between bouncing outside or cutting up inside based on how the defensive front reacts.
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and alignment since stacked or crashing linebackers over the pulling guard's lane can blow up the play before the puller gets moving. Identify if the defense is in a run-heavy front like a 4-3 under or 46 look, since these fronts can beat Power O with fast flow to the playside gap. Post-snap, key the playside defensive end and any user-controlled defender crashing down hard, as this forces the HB to bounce outside where the puller must adjust on the fly. Watch for a linebacker blitzing through the exact gap the puller is aiming for since this is the primary way defenses stuff Power O for a loss. If the defense shows two high safeties and light box counts, this is a green light situation since there is less immediate run support to string the play out.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the box count to confirm you have enough blockers versus the defensive front before snapping.
Attack base fronts and light boxes (six or fewer in the box) since Power O relies on the puller getting a clean angle without extra unblocked defenders crashing the hole.
Hot route the flanker or slot receiver into a quick out or hitch if you see the defense stacking the box, giving yourself a bail out option against run blitzes.
Pair this with Read Option and Inside Zone Lt from the same set so the defense has to respect multiple gap schemes off similar formation looks, keeping linebackers honest and slower to fill.
Run this on early downs (first and ten or second and short) when you want to stay ahead of the sticks and set up play action shots like WR Corner or Pivot Dig later in the series.
