PA Read is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Flex Y Off Wk that uses run fakes to hold the linebackers before attacking the field with a three level stretch. The backside receiver runs a deep comeback while the TE works a corner route from the middle of the field, and the frontside receiver runs an under route breaking flat that crosses the field underneath. The play fakes an outside zone run look to freeze the second level, then relies on the QB reading the flat defender and the corner route defender working from the boundary out to the numbers as the primary progression, with the comeback route serving as the outlet against off coverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch the strong safety and free safety alignment pre-snap since a two high shell forces the QB to check down to the flat route instead of the corner route. Key the flat defender after the snap, if he sits on the underneath crosser the QB will look to the corner route breaking to the sideline. User the corner route defender or lurk with a linebacker in the middle of the field to disrupt the TE's break and force the QB to hold the ball longer. Look for linebackers biting hard on the run fake, that opens the crossing route underneath for an easy completion so spy or delay a linebacker on run action. Bring pressure off the edge on the backside since the comeback route takes time to develop and a fast interior blitz can beat the play action fake before routes materialize.

Usage Tips

Use PA Read on early downs like first and second and short to medium distance so the run fake actually holds linebackers and safeties.

Check pre-snap for single high safety looks or Cover 3 shells since the corner route from the TE has room to work against a rotating safety.

If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 4 with two deep safeties, prioritize the flat route and comeback route since the corner route will be capped.

Hot route the backside receiver into a deeper comeback or hitch if you are getting a hard press corner to give the QB an easier sideline throw.

Pair this play with Outside Zone or Y Lead Read Option from the same set so the run fake sells consistently and the defense cannot key on PA Read as an obvious pass tip.
