Breakdown

Flanker Spot is a classic Cover 3 beater built around the Spot concept on the three man side, with the outside receiver running a corner route off the top, the slot running a hitch to sit in the flat window, and the inside receiver settling into the underneath spot route at the sticks. On the backside, the tight end runs a deep crossing route from right to left that clears out the middle of the field and gives you a big field-stretching answer if the defense rotates hard to the trips side. The lone receiver to the left runs a vertical seam/go route that occupies the deep defender and opens the corner throw behind it. This is a true zone beater against Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells, and the primary read progression starts with the corner route, works down to the flat hitch and spot combo, and comes back to the crossing tight end as the last resort against man coverage or heavy rotation.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, a single high safety shading toward the trips side signals Cover 3 and tells you the corner route will have room behind the corner. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he sinks with the hitch runner instead of widening, the spot route in the middle window will be open for an easy completion. Key the linebacker or nickel defender assigned to the crossing tight end, if he opens his hips late or gets picked off by traffic, the deep crosser becomes a big gain against zone rotation. Man coverage with a defender aligned tight on the go route to the backside can bait a shot play if you notice the corner shaded inside pre-snap. Watch for a hard blitz look with the linebackers crowding the box, since the spot concept holds up well against underneath pressure but the corner route timing can be disrupted by an overload to that side.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait the safety and confirm if you are looking at a single high shell before the snap.

If you see Cover 3 with a hard flat defender, take the corner route first since it sits behind the cornerback and in front of the deep third safety.

Against man coverage, hot route the spot runner into a quick option or slant so he does not sit and get jumped by an underneath defender.

Pair this call with Curls or Double Slants earlier in a drive so the defense respects shorter routes before you hit them with the corner route shot off the same formation.

Use this on second and medium to second and long, since the spot combo gives you a built in checkdown while the corner route stays live as an explosive play if the safety bites underneath.
