Counter Y is a Power Run concept out of Shotgun Flex Y Off Wk, with the offensive line pulling the backside guard to lead through the hole while the HB takes a counter step before hitting the crease. The play diagram shows tight receiver splits with both outside WRs and the TE releasing vertically as decoys to hold the deep defenders, leaving the box as the true focus of this run. The primary read is the HB reading the pulling guard's kick out block and the TE/fullback lead block at the point of attack, working from the misdirection step into the designated gap.
Pre snap identify if the defense is stacked in the box with linebackers creeping to the line, since that signals a run blitz that can beat counter before the pull develops. Watch strong safety alignment tight to the box, which often means run support help that can crash the counter path early. Post snap key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker, if they sit and read instead of attacking upfield they can string the play out and force a cutback with no room. User controlled defenders sitting in the backside cutback lane are the biggest threat to this run, so scan for a spy or lurking linebacker before committing to the cut. Odd front looks with a true nose over center tend to clog the interior gaps this counter is designed to hit, making the play less effective against 3-4 base fronts.
Use this play on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when defenses are more likely to sit in base personnel and respect the pass first look. Check the box count pre snap and if you see six or fewer defenders in the box this counter scheme has a numbers advantage. Bring your own controlled blocker as the puller if available and manually seal the first defender who shows outside leverage to protect the cutback lane. Pair this with Inside Zone Split and HB Draw in the same set to keep linebackers guessing between zone flow and gap schemes off similar shotgun alignment. Avoid calling this into aggressive fire zone blitz looks with an extra defender crashing downhill since the counter's timing needs a beat to develop.
