Breakdown

Four Verticals out of Shotgun Flex Y Off Wk sends both outside receivers and the slot/TE up the seams and sideline verticals while the running back releases up the middle on a check release vertical route, giving four vertical stems stacked from numbers to numbers. The single receiver to the closed side runs a go route to hold the corner deep, and the offensive line slides protection to pick up the four man rush with the back scanning for blitz before releasing. This is a pure man and zone beater built to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells by overloading the deep safeties, with the primary read progression starting at the seam route that settles between the levels of coverage before working outside to the numbers routes.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two deep safeties or a single high safety, since that dictates which vertical route will have the most space. Cover 2 shells are vulnerable because the safeties have to choose between the two seam routes, so watch for the safety to bite on the near seam and throw the far seam behind him. Cover 3 with only one deep defender gets stretched horizontally, so look for the deep third defender to widen toward the sideline vertical and attack the vacated middle seam. Post-snap, key the underneath linebackers and nickel defender for a lurk drop into the middle seam window, since a sitting linebacker at 10 to 15 yards can jump the intermediate throw and create a turnover. This concept struggles against a robber or Tampa 2 look where a linebacker or safety sinks into the deep middle, so if you see that rotation post-snap, check down to the running back or peek the sideline vertical instead of forcing the seam.

Usage Tips

Use this play on any down and distance where you need explosive yardage, but it shines most on second and long or third and long when defenses commit extra bodies to underneath zones. Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if both safeties are deep at 10 to 12 yards you are likely seeing Cover 2, so target the seam routes in the honey hole between the corner and safety. If you see a single high safety with corners playing off, that is Cover 3, and you want to work the field side vertical or hold the middle seam since the deep third defenders have to split four verticals. Hot route the running back into a chip and release or a shallow drag if you diagnose a blitz, since his vertical release is the first easy check-down against pressure. Pair this play with Curls or Flanker Spot in your play-calling sequence to condition the defense into sitting on shorter zones, then hit Four Verticals off that tendency for an explosive play. Against man coverage, use a receiver in motion or a stutter release hot route to create separation at the top of the route stem, since this concept is at its most dangerous versus any man coverage without a deep safety help.
