Sluggo Seam out of Shotgun Flex Y Off Wk lines up with four receivers stretching the field and no protection help beyond the offensive line, telling you this is a straight dropback pass. The outside receiver runs the sluggo (slant and go) to bait the corner before breaking vertical, the inner slot receiver climbs a seam route up the hash, and the two remaining receivers on the opposite side run vertical and corner-breaking routes to occupy the backside coverage. This is a man beater designed to attack off man or press corners who bite on the initial slant fake, with the seam route as the primary read against single high safety looks and the sluggo becoming the go-to shot play once the corner commits.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the safety is rotated to a single high alignment, this tips man coverage underneath and opens the sluggo route for a big play. Watch the corner's press or off alignment on the sluggo receiver, aggressive press corners are more susceptible to the double move. Post-snap, track any user-controlled defender lurking in the middle of the field, a rangy free safety can undercut the seam route if he reads it early. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties, the sluggo route is more likely to be capped, shift your read to the seam route working the intermediate window. Beware disguised zone blitzes or nano blitz packages that bring extra rushers, since the deep routes take time to develop and the quarterback needs a clean pocket to hit the shot play.
Usage Tips
Look for single high safety alignment pre-snap since this play is built to punish Cover 1 and Cover 3 shells that put a corner in man coverage on the sluggo route.
Key the corner over your sluggo receiver at the snap, if he jumps the slant fake, immediately look to the vertical break for the explosive shot play.
Use the seam route as your safety valve when the deep half is occupied, it holds up well against zone drops from linebackers and beats Cover 2 robber looks.
Pair this call with Curls or Double Slants earlier in a drive so the defense respects short combination routes, then hit Sluggo Seam once corners start jumping underneath routes.
Best deployed on second or third and medium to long situations where defenses are more likely to sit in man coverage or single high shells expecting a longer developing play.
