Double Post is a five man protection pass concept out of Shotgun Flex Y Off Wk that isolates two vertical post routes into the same deep third from the two inside receivers. Both the slot receiver and the TE run posts that stack and cross at different depths, creating a natural pick element against man coverage while overloading one deep safety in zone. The outside receiver runs a deep in cutting across the middle underneath the posts, the backside X runs a comeback breaking to the sideline, and the HB releases into a flat route to the boundary, giving the quarterback a five man route distribution with the deep posts as the primary read and the flat and comeback as the checkdowns.

Defensive Reads

Identify two high safeties pre snap, this is a strong indicator of Cover 2 or Cover 4 which this play is designed to exploit with the double post stem Watch the deep safety leverage after the snap, if he commits to the first post the second post window opens up immediately behind him Key the flat defender or nickel corner, if he sinks with the shallow crosser the HB flat route and the comeback become your answer Beware of a single high safety with man coverage underneath, since that alignment allows the deep defender to sit in the middle of the field and rob the crossing action of both posts Watch for a user controlled lurk defender sitting in the intermediate middle zone, he can jump the shorter post route if the quarterback holds it too long

Usage Tips

Read the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties get ready to work the low post first before the high post clears out the coverage

Use the flat route to the HB as your quick outlet against Cover 2 or Cover 4 if the corner sinks and takes away the shallow crosser

Motion or check to a hot route on the TE post if the defense shows man press with no help over the top, since the double post naturally creates a rub against man coverage

Pair this play with Curls or Double Slants in the same set to keep linebackers honest on shorter routes before hitting them with the double post shot play

Best called on second or third and medium when defenses are more likely to sit in Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells, since this is specifically built to attack those coverages
