Double Post out of Shotgun Flex Y Off Wk lines up with two receivers stacked to the left, a tight end tucked in as the third receiver, and an RB releasing to the flat opposite the concept. Both the outside receiver and the tight end break into post routes at different depths, creating a natural high low double post look while the slot receiver runs an over route underneath to clear space, and the backside X runs a comeback to hold the corner. This is a Cover 2 and Cover 4 beater designed to split the safeties, with the primary read progression going from the deep post to the underneath post as the safeties commit, then checking down to the RB in the flat if both are taken away.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check for two safeties splitting the field evenly, which signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and tells you this play has a strong chance to work Watch the safety over the double post side post-snap, if he stays flat footed reading the QB he can undercut the deep post, so user him and force a decision Look for man coverage on the outside receiver, since a press corner with no safety help over the top can jump the post route and take it away completely Key the underneath linebacker or nickel defender on the over route crosser, if he sinks into the passing lane he can wall off both post routes and force a check down Watch for a Cover 3 rotation or single high safety shell, since one deep defender can rob the middle of the field and shut down the double post read entirely
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify two high safeties before the snap since this play is built to attack Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells by forcing both safeties to choose which post to take away
Use the deep post as your first read against Cover 2 since the safety has to cover twice the width, and if he bites on the shallow post the deep post will split the seam
Hot route the RB to a quick flat or check release if you are getting an overload blitz look, since the play does not have a dedicated blocker for extra rushers
Pair this play with Curls or Double Slants earlier in a series so defenders start jumping underneath routes, opening up the double post shot later in the game
Best called on second and medium or first down shot plays when you have play clock to let the double post routes develop and the QB has a clean pocket
