RPO Read Screen out of Shotgun Flex Y Off Wk pairs an interior run action with a bubble style screen to the boundary receiver, giving the quarterback a true pre-snap and post-snap conflict read. The backside X receiver runs a stick and comeback combo to hold the corner while the outside receiver on the screen side sits and works back toward the QB after the flat defender bites on run flow, with the offensive line selling the blocking scheme up front to freeze second level defenders. This is an RPO built to beat aggressive run fits and overplayed alley defenders, with the primary read being the flat or force defender: if he crashes down on the run action, pull and throw the screen, if he sits or bails, hand the ball off.
Watch the flat defender or overhang corner before the snap, if he is walked up in run support he is likely the conflict defender on this RPO. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's first step, if he flows hard downhill toward the run action that opens the screen throwing lane. Zone coverages like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with an aggressive flat defender are the most vulnerable shells against this concept. Man coverage with press corners can shut this down quickly since the screen receiver has no room to work if the defender stays attached at the snap. User controlled defenders sitting in a shallow zone or spying the run action can jump the screen route, so mix in the backside route or handoff to counter that user tendency.
Check the flat defender and slot corner alignment before the snap, if they are sitting inside or showing blitz off the edge that is your green light for the screen.
Use the RPO Peek Slant and RPO Glance Post plays in this set to keep the defense honest against both the flat defender and the safeties, forcing conflict reads on every snap.
Run this on early downs like first and second and ten to punish teams that load the box or send extra defenders on run blitzes.
Snap the ball fast off a no huddle to prevent the defense from rotating late and disguising the flat defender's leverage.
If the corner presses hard on the screen receiver, hot route him to a quick slant or fade instead of relying on the screen read.
