The slot receiver runs an over route working across the field while the outside receivers occupy the deep and flat zones, creating natural picks against man coverage while also stretching zone defenders horizontally. This is primarily a zone beater built to exploit soft spots in Cover 3 and Cover 2 shells, though the over route can also sit down against off man for a solid gain. The primary read progression starts with the slot over route breaking across the middle, then works to the flat route underneath if the middle is clogged, and finally checks down to the running back on the backside as a last resort.

Defensive Reads

Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap since a shallow drop signals Cover 3 or Cover 4 and opens a window for the over route to sit behind him. Check safety alignment pre-snap, a two-high shell with soft corners tells you the over route will have room to work before the safety can rotate over. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender flashing into the shallow zone or lurking near the crossing route, since a well-timed jump on the over can blow this play up for a loss. Man coverage with inside leverage on the slot receiver is a green light to let the over route work since it creates natural rub traffic. If the corners are showing hard outside leverage, hot route the slot to a shallow drag to beat aggressive man coverage underneath. This play pairs well with Curls and Double Slants in the same set since all three attack similar horizontal zones, letting you keep the defense guessing on which level you are targeting. Call this on second and medium or third and short situations where the defense is likely to sit in zone coverage and give up the over route for a manageable gain. If the defense starts jumping the over route after seeing it once, mix in RPO Peek Slant or RPO Glance Post from the same formation to counter with a quicker pull read.
