Breakdown

X Dagger out of Shotgun Flex Y Off Wk sends the X receiver on a deep dagger route, sitting down over the middle after a vertical stem to clear the underneath zone for the seam runner. The slot receiver runs a corner route stacking behind the dagger, creating a natural high low read on any zone defender sitting in the middle of the field, while the backside receiver runs an isolated dig or comeback that turns into a one on one win versus man coverage. The HB releases outside into a checkdown flat route, giving the quarterback a built in dump off if both levels of the dagger concept are covered. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater, with the primary read starting on the deep corner route to hold the deep defender before working down to the sitting dagger route and finally the HB in the flat.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and spacing, if both safeties are shaded to one side or rotating late this signals Cover 3 or Cover 1 rotation that the dagger concept is designed to exploit. Watch the flat defender and the underneath linebacker responsible for the hook zone, since a well timed user lurk sitting on the dagger route can jump the sit route and bait a turnover. Key the corner route from the slot receiver, if a deep defender widens to take it away, the sit route underneath should come open against zone drops. Against Cover 2, identify whether the safety leverages the corner route or stays flat footed in the middle, since a passive Cover 2 shell with slow safety rotation leaves the seam and corner route vulnerable. Man coverage with an overhang blitz or nano blitz look can disrupt this play quickly, so watch for edge pressure with no deep safety help, which forces a fast decision or a checkdown to the HB.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two deep or rotating to a single high look, since this concept is built specifically to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells.

If you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, prioritize the backside route since it becomes a true one on one win rather than working through the dagger combo.

Use hot routes to check the HB into a stick or angle route versus known blitz teams so you retain a quick outlet against pressure looks.

Pair this play with Curls or Double Slants on early downs to set up the defense expecting shorter combinations, then hit X Dagger on second or third and medium once the defense starts sitting on underneath routes.

Best used on second and long or third and medium situations where you need a defense to declare zone coverage, since the sit route and corner route stress both levels of a single high safety.
