The primary read is the frontside A gap to B gap combo block, with the RB reading the play-side double team and bending backside if the linebacker fills hard, making this a run play designed to beat stacked fronts and gap-shooting linebackers rather than any coverage shell.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the linebackers are stacked in the box or spread wide, since heavy boxes with six or more defenders make this a tougher conversion unless you have numbers on the play side. Watch safety depth: two-high shells with safeties sitting back leave light boxes that this zone run exploits, while single-high robber looks with a safety creeping down signal run support and should trigger a cutback read. Post-snap, key the play-side linebacker's first step: if he scrapes over the top of the zone flow, cut it back behind the center; if he shoots the gap untouched, that signals a run blitz and the RB needs to press the hole quickly before the double team is beaten. User-controlled defenders spying the A gap or crashing down from depth are the biggest threat to this concept, so avoid calling it into obvious run blitz personnel like a 46 Bear front or heavy nickel blitz packages with both linebackers walked up. Zone Split loses value against gap-control fronts like an Odd Stack or 3-4 with a dedicated nose eating double teams, since there are fewer natural creases for the zone stretch to develop.
Usage Tips
Run this out of neutral or run-heavy down and distance like first and ten or second and short to keep defenses honest against your RPO package in this set. Check the defensive front pre-snap: if you see a 4-3 or 4-4 look with linebackers stacked tight to the line, this play hits fast before flow can scrape over the top. Pair Inside Zone Split with RPO Peek Slant and RPO Glance Post from the same formation and personnel so the defense cannot sit on run keys without exposing the slant or post window. Use hot routes sparingly here since the concept relies on stock zone blocking, but motion the flexed TE across if you need one extra gap read against edge pressure. Against aggressive user linebackers who crash downhill immediately after the snap, bounce the run to the backside cutback lane instead of forcing it into the called gap.
