Outside Zone from Shotgun Doubles Y Off Nasty is a zone run play design that stretches the offensive line laterally to attack the edge before pressing upfield. The diagram shows the HB taking a wide handoff path toward the sideline with the offensive line executing zone steps and combo blocks that flow horizontally, while the two outside receivers stay uninvolved as decoys to hold their defenders. This is a run play, not a pass concept, and the primary read is the HB's aiming point off the edge, keying the flow of the playside linebacker and the defensive end's leverage to decide whether to bounce outside, bend to the second level, or cut back through the natural cutback lane.
Look for a light box pre snap with the safety rotated away from the run strength, since that tells you the edge should be open for the bounce. Watch the playside defensive end's first step, if he crashes hard inside you have a clean bounce outside read. Key the flow of the middle linebacker, if he overruns the play chasing the stretch action, cut back immediately behind the guard. Heavy fronts with an extra defender stacked over the tackle or a linebacker sitting outside the tight end can blow up the edge, so avoid forcing outside zone into eight man fronts. User controlled defenders flying downhill on the snap can be baited into overpursuit, giving the cutback lane even more room if the ball carrier is patient.
Check the defensive front pre snap and identify if the defensive end is squeezing hard inside, since that dictates whether you bounce outside or use the cutback lane. Use this against light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the run fit to avoid getting gang tackled at the line. Pair this with Inside Zone and Counter Y in your play calling sequence so defenders cannot sit on outside zone flow and get burned by cutback or counter action. Motion the receivers or use hot routes sparingly here since the concept relies on the offensive line's zone blocking rather than route manipulation. Save this for early down and distance situations like first and ten or second and short where defenses are not selling out against the pass.
