Breakdown

Zone Fake Jet is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off Nasty that sells outside zone action to the play side while the QB fakes the jet motion handoff before working backside. The diagram shows the offensive line executing a zone-blocking slide, the fullback or H-back crashing down to sell run flow, and the boundary receiver on the play side release running an out route toward the sideline off the play-action fake. This is designed as a zone beater that punishes linebackers and safeties for flowing hard on the run fake, and the primary read progression starts with the flat or out route breaking to the sideline before the QB works back to any backside options if the zone defenders bite on the play fake.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, look for linebackers cheating toward the jet motion side or safeties rotating down into the box, both are signs the defense respects the run and will bite on the fake, opening up the play side out route. Post-snap, watch the flat defender or overhang corner, if he steps up to fill the run gap instead of sinking with the receiver you have an easy completion on the out route breaking to the sideline. This play struggles against disciplined zone defenses that keep linebackers in their drops and refuse to bite on run flow, since the fake loses value if defenders do not commit downhill. Man coverage with no safety help over the top can still be attacked here since the out route is a quick winner, but watch for a cornerback playing outside leverage who can jump the route if the QB telegraphs it. Beware of blitz packages that send an extra defender off the edge on the play side, since the zone-blocking scheme is built for run displacement and can leave the QB exposed if he holds the ball too long selling the fake.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when defenses are geared up to stop the run, since the jet motion and zone action sell hardest against aggressive fronts.

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two deep safeties sitting still instead of creeping toward the box, the defense may not be respecting the run fake and you should be ready to move to your secondary read faster.

Pair this with Inside Zone and Outside Zone from the same set earlier in a drive so linebackers start keying run fits, then dial up Zone Fake Jet to punish overaggressive flow to the ball.

Hot route the backside receiver into a deeper comeback or dig if you are facing a defense sitting on the shallow flat route, giving you a answer against zone defenders who sink under the initial break.

Snap the ball with rhythm timing on the jet motion, a late or rushed snap kills the run fake sell and tips your hand to defenders reading backfield flow.
