DBL Cross H-Choice out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off Nasty is a pure dropback passing concept built around two crossing routes that stretch the middle of the field horizontally. The outside receiver to the trips side runs a deep crosser all the way across the field while the inside slot runs a shallower crosser underneath in the opposite direction, creating natural traffic for man defenders and a rub against zone drops. The backside receiver runs a choice route with option-based footwork against the boundary, and the running back releases into a short flat/check route out of the backfield as the underneath outlet. This is a man beater first thanks to the crossing traffic, with the choice route giving you a built-in answer versus zone if the crossers get taken away. Primary read progression starts with the choice route side, works into the deep crosser as your first in-progression read, then check down to the underneath crosser and finally the running back in the flat.

Defensive Reads

Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow he can jump the underneath crosser and blow up your first checkdown option. Key the safety rotation post-snap, a rolled down safety into the box signals man coverage underneath and opens the deep crosser against a trailing defender. Look for a user-controlled defender sitting in the intermediate hook zone, this is the biggest threat to both crossing routes since he can undercut either one if he reads your eyes. Cover 2 with hard corners can squeeze the choice route and force it to settle short, so check the flat defender's leverage before committing to that side. Blitz-heavy fronts that bring five or six rushers leave the crossers wide open in the vacated middle, so if you see extra rushers stepping up, get the ball out immediately to whichever crosser clears first.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing single high or two high shell since the deep crosser will have room to work against single high man coverage.

If you see man coverage across the board, prioritize the deep crosser early in your progression because the natural pick action from the underneath crosser creates separation.

Against zone, especially Cover 3 or Cover 4 match, lean on the choice route since the receiver can settle or break based on the underneath defender's positioning.

Use this on early downs to set up Cross Y Trail or PA Y Cross from the same set, since the crossing action looks identical pre-snap and forces linebackers to guess run or pass.

On third and medium, the running back check route is a safe answer if both crossers are blanketed, so do not force the deep throw into a lurking linebacker or safety.

Motion checks are limited here, so rely on alignment reads of the corners and safeties before the snap rather than hot routing extra options.
