DBL Cross H-Choice out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off Nasty lines up with two receivers stacked to the boundary and a tight bunch to the field side. The backside X releases vertically up the sideline while the two field side receivers run crossing routes underneath, with the outside man breaking flat across the field and the inside man sitting into a choice route in the middle. The H back works a short angle route out of the backfield as a checkdown/man beater option while the line slides to protect. This is a true crosser concept designed to beat man coverage with natural rub picks, and the primary read starts with the choice route sitting down against zone before working to the deep crosser and finally the H back check.
Defensive Reads
Watch for two high safeties pre-snap since they often signal zone coverage that lets the crosser work into the open middle. If corners are pressed on the bunch receivers, expect man coverage and know the choice route can break away for an easy pitch and catch. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker drop depth since a shallow drop can jump the choice route and disrupt the read progression. Watch for user controlled defenders sitting in the shallow crossing lane, since that lurk threat can bait a pick six on the deep crosser. Against blitz heavy calls, check if the H back angle route is left uncovered as a hot read outlet.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man or zone by checking safety depth and corner alignment on the bunch side.
Against man coverage, prioritize the choice route since it can settle or break away from the defender based on leverage.
Against zone, look to the deep crosser sitting in the void behind linebackers and in front of deep safeties.
Use the H back angle route as a quick answer versus blitz looks when your line slide protection is overloaded.
