Pivot In Seams is a five man route concept out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off Nasty that clears out the defense with two vertical seam routes from the inline TE and slot while the backside receiver runs a shallow pivot in to the middle of the field. The point man off the line pivots out and back in to sit underneath, giving the quarterback a quick outlet against pressure, while the two seam runners stretch the hash defenders vertically to open throwing lanes. The primary read starts with the seam from the nasty TE side, then works to the pivot in as the underneath check down against zone drops or blitz looks.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety shells since a single high look leaves the seams isolated against linebackers who cannot match the speed vertically. Key the flat defender and underneath linebackers immediately after the snap, if they widen with the pivot route the seams will have a clean throwing lane down the middle. Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the intermediate middle zone, this is the primary threat that jumps the pivot in route and baits quarterbacks into a pick six. Cover 2 with aggressive corners squeezing the seams at the top of the route can shut this concept down, so be ready to check down to the pivot if the safeties clamp down early. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge often leave the pivot in route wide open as the natural checkdown, so user a spy or plus one defender underneath to take that access away.

Usage Tips

Check the pre-snap safety alignment first, if you see two high safeties bail into deep halves the seams have a great shot to split the numbers before the safeties can rotate down.

Use the pivot in route as your answer versus man coverage pressure since the quick in and out move creates natural separation against tight man corners.

Hot route the backside seam runner to a corner route if you diagnose Cover 3 with a hard flat defender, this stretches the deep third defender and opens the seam window even wider.

Pair this play with Double Post and X Dagger in the same set to keep defenses honest on seam and vertical shots, then mix in Pivot In Seams to punish teams that start sitting on the deep routes.

Best called on second and medium to third and short since the pivot in gives a reliable underneath conversion while the seams threaten explosive gains if the defense overcommits to the sticks.
