Defensive Reads

Watch the safety rotation post snap, if one safety bails hard to a post before the ball is thrown that safety is keying the route and the other post should be open. Beware of a Cover 3 buzz or Tampa 2 look where the middle linebacker drops deep, since that defender can rob the crossing route and shrink the passing window. Check the flat defender and slot corner leverage, if they sink with the posts instead of staying flat footed, the underlying drag route becomes the easy answer. This play struggles against man coverage with a deep lurking safety in the middle of the field, so audible or hot route away from single high shells with a rangy free safety.

Usage Tips

Call this on second or third and long when you need to stretch a two high shell vertically down the middle of the field.

Check pre snap for two deep safeties sitting at 10 to 12 yards, that alignment tells you the post routes will split the numbers.

If the corners show press man, hot route the outside posts to a slant or use a quick motion to get a free release before the snap.

Use the crossing route as your check down against zone drops if both safeties bracket the posts, since it will settle into the vacated middle window.

Pair this play with Cross Y Trail or X Dagger in the same set so the defense has to respect both vertical shots and in-breaking routes, making your play-action rollout call later even more effective.
