Mtn Smash out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off Nasty runs a classic Smash concept to the right side paired with a deep dig and a flat route on the left. The backside receiver runs a corner route from the outside stack while the inside receiver at that same stack sits down on a quick flat/hitch, forming the two-level Smash read that attacks Cover 2 and other zones with a hard flat defender. On the left, one receiver runs a deep in-breaking dig behind the linebackers, another works an out route underneath, and the running back releases on a shallow drag across the formation. This is a pass play designed as a Cover 2 beater, with the primary read progression starting at the corner-flat Smash combo before working backside to the dig and drag as checkdown options.
Post-snap, key the flat defender on the Smash side first, if he sits on the flat/hitch route the corner route window opens behind him for an easy explosive gain. Watch for a user-controlled safety rotating late to double the corner route, that is your cue to reset your progression to the backside dig, which will be working open behind the linebackers. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 match zones, the corner route can get taken away by a deep defender staying over the top, so be ready to work the dig or RB drag underneath instead of forcing the Smash side. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is where the corner route wins most consistently, since the flat/hitch route occupies underneath defenders and creates natural separation on the corner. Beware of a nano blitz or overload pressure package up front, since the RB releasing into the drag route removes a blocker and can leave your QB exposed if you hold the ball too long looking for the deep shot.
Pre-snap, identify whether the corner is playing off or squatting near the sideline, since the Smash concept lives or dies on stressing the flat defender with the corner route stacked over the flat/hitch route.
If you see two deep safeties (Cover 2 shell), trust the Smash side first because the corner route will split the safety and corner while the flat defender cannot cover both underneath routes.
Use the RB drag as your check-down against blitz-heavy looks since it clears out quickly and gives you a rhythm throw versus disguised pressure.
Hot route the backside out route into a deeper comeback against teams that jump underneath routes aggressively, this keeps the field balanced if the defense overloads the Smash side.
Pair this play with Double Post or X Dagger in your call sheet sequencing, since both punish teams that start cheating a safety over to stop the Smash concept on early downs.
