Fake Jet HB Seam runs jet motion across the backfield as a fake to hold the flow of the second and third level defenders before the QB works the play-action pass. The backside outside receiver runs a deep vertical seam that splits the safeties while the two receivers to the strong side stack a corner route and a deep in breaker over the middle, with the near slot running a shallow drag underneath to hold linebackers. This is a play-action seam shot designed to punish zone coverage and single high shells, with the primary read being the deep seam first, then working down to the corner route and the underneath drag as checkdowns.
Defensive Reads
Key the safety depth and width before the snap, a two high shell that stays balanced after the jet fake is the toughest look for this concept since it takes away the seam throwing lane. Watch for the single high safety biting on the run fake, if he steps up on the jet motion the seam route behind him is wide open for a big gain. Identify if a linebacker spies the jet motion man across the formation, that is your confirmation of man coverage underneath and the seam should win against most linebacker drops. Look for a Cover 3 buzz rotation from the corner or safety to the flat, that rotation can clog the seam lane and force you to check down to the drag route. Beware disguised blitzes off the edge since the play-action fake holds the offensive line assignments and can leave the quarterback exposed if the defense sends extra rushers through the seam side.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or in play-action heavy sequences after you have established the Zone Fake Jet run to sell the jet motion fake. Watch the safety rotation pre-snap, if you see a single high safety cheat toward the seam side, that safety has to cover too much ground and the seam window opens up big. Hot route the shallow drag into a quick option route if you are facing man coverage underneath to give yourself a rhythm throw. Pair this with Inside Zone and Zone Fake Jet earlier in a series so linebackers start biting on the jet action, which sets up the seam shot as a home run play later in the drive. Use motion adjustments to check the defense presnap, if a linebacker or safety follows the jet man across the formation, that confirms man coverage and you should trust the seam route over top.
