This is a run play built off outside zone action with the jet sweep as the actual ball carrier, using the fake threat of a zone handoff to freeze linebackers. The primary read is the edge: get width fast, read the alignment of the force defender and follow the blocking wall upfield once the edge is turned.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flow of the linebackers at the snap, if they bite on the zone fake and flow inside, the jet sweep to the perimeter will have a clean running lane. Key the force defender, usually a cornerback or safety rotated to the edge, since he determines whether the jet sweep bounces outside or gets cut back. This play struggles against fast-flow defenses with disciplined edge containment or a nano blitz designed to attack backfield motion before the pitch. Zone coverages with a hard edge set defender and linebackers who stay square to their gaps will limit the sweep before it turns the corner. Man coverage with a blitzing corner off the edge can blow this play up if the timing of the motion and snap is not disguised well.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is running with the jet man or staying home, which tells you if you are facing man or zone principles. If the linebackers flow hard to the fake zone side, the jet sweep path to the perimeter should be wide open. This play works best on early downs or in space situations like 2nd and short where defenses are not expecting outside speed in space. Pair it in your play-calling sequence with Zone Fake Jet or Fake Jet HB Seam from the same set so the defense has to respect both the jet sweep and the play-action pass off identical motion. Against aggressive edge defenders who crash hard, consider hot routing the perimeter blocker to seal inside instead of engaging upfield.
