RPO Zone Read Bubble out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off Nasty is a true run-pass option built off an inside zone look to the QB read side. The diagram shows the offensive line executing zone blocking steps while the backside receiver runs a bubble screen route behind the line of scrimmage, giving the QB a numbers-based read on the alley defender. This is a pre-snap and post-snap numbers RPO rather than a straight man or zone beater, since the QB decision is dictated by defender leverage on the bubble side, not coverage shell. Primary progression is: read the box count and edge defender flow, hand off inside zone if the box is light or the defender crashes down, pull and throw the bubble if that defender widens or the slot corner sits off.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a walked-down slot corner or overhang defender pre-snap, that alignment signals the defense is prepared to squeeze the bubble read. If the defense shows a heavy box with an extra linebacker or safety creeping down, expect the QB to pull and throw quickly, so user your slot defender to jump the bubble route. Zone coverages with soft corners tend to allow easy conversions on the bubble, so aggressive man coverage or press alignment on the outside slot receiver disrupts the leverage the RPO relies on. Blitzes off the edge can be effective since the zone read element forces the offensive line to commit inside, leaving the perimeter conflicted if the defense brings a fast overhang blitzer. Post-snap, watch the running back's mesh point with the QB, if the QB eyes stay up field immediately, the throw is likely coming out fast to the bubble.
Usage Tips
Count the box pre-snap and identify whether the defense has a true numbers advantage to the bubble side before the snap.
Key the alley defender (usually a slot corner or overhang linebacker) immediately after the snap, if he crashes down on the run, pull and throw the bubble instantly.
Use this on early downs in 1st and 10 or 2nd and medium to keep the defense honest and force linebackers to respect both the run and the quick screen.
Pair this with Inside Zone and Outside Zone from the same set so the defense cannot key run fits off formation tendency alone.
Sequence this with PA Y Cross or X Dagger later in a drive once the defense starts overplaying the bubble, since those plays punish aggressive flat defenders with double moves over the top.
