Run this out of neutral downs like first and ten or second and short so the defense cannot sit on the run key.

Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense has six or more in the box, consider hitting a hot route or motion to influence the linebacker flow before the snap.

Use it as a change of pace after showing Inside Zone or Outside Zone from the same set so the defense has to respect multiple gap schemes out of identical formation.

Against aggressive defensive tackles that shoot gaps, this counter action punishes overpursuit since the misdirection step forces linemen to commit before the ball actually arrives.

Pair Counter Y with Cross Y Trail or PA Y Cross on early downs to keep linebackers honest and prevent them from crashing down on the counter step.
