Mtn Slot Fades comes out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off Nasty with a jet motion man sweeping across the backfield before releasing on a wheel route up the sideline, adding a layer of deception to the vertical concept. On the boundary side the outside receiver runs a fade up the numbers while the inside slot receiver releases outside and up on his own fade, stacking two vertical shots on that half of the field. Backside, the receiver runs a deep dig that sits down and works across the middle after clearing the linebackers, giving you a shorter answer if the fades are covered. This is a man beater built to isolate one on one matchups on the perimeter, with the primary read starting on the boundary fade for a back shoulder shot, then working to the slot fade, and finally coming down to the wheel and dig combo underneath if the corners jump the verticals.

Defensive Reads

Presnap, identify if the safety over the slot receiver is rotating down or staying deep, a single high safety leaves the boundary fade in a true one on one matchup you should exploit immediately. Watch the cornerback technique on the outside receiver, if he is in soft press or off coverage the back shoulder fade timing window shrinks and you may need to move to the slot fade instead. Track the flow of the jet motion defender, if a linebacker or safety chases the motion man across the field it confirms man coverage and opens up the wheel route against a slower defender. Against zone coverage, key the underneath linebackers and their depth, if they sink hard to protect the deep middle the backside dig will have a soft spot to settle into for an easy completion. User the deep half safety if you are on defense facing this play, since the concept relies on winning vertically outside, taking away the top of the fades with a rangy safety forces the quarterback into the low value wheel or dig read.

Usage Tips

Check the corner alignment before the snap, this play is designed to win one on one on the outside so you want to see press or single high looks rather than heavy two deep shells.

Use the jet motion man presnap to identify man versus zone, if a defender follows the motion across the formation it confirms man coverage and tells you the wheel route will likely be open late.

Hot route the backside dig into a deeper crosser or comeback if you are facing a Cover 3 shell that sits soft underneath, since the stock route can get clogged by underneath zone defenders.

Best used on second and long or third and medium to long when you need an explosive shot play, since the deep concepts take time to develop and need a clean pocket.

Pair this with Mtn HB Cross Screen or RPO Zone Read Bubble earlier in a drive to bait aggressive linebackers and safeties up, then hit this shot play once the defense starts cheating on shorter routes.
