Inside Zone out of Shotgun Bunch Str Nasty is a straightforward zone run play with the bunch trio to one side and a tight formation up front. The offensive line flows in unison toward the play side, reading gaps as the RB presses the mesh point and picks the crease off his blockers' zone steps. This is a pure run play, not a play-action look or RPO in this diagram, so the primary read is the frontside gap combo blocks up front, with the RB reading inside to outside off the double teams before bouncing outside if the backside cutback lane isn't there.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify linebacker depth and alignment since stacked or crashing linebackers signal a run blitz that this zone scheme is designed to absorb with double teams. Check safety rotation, if both safeties are deep in a two high shell, the box is lighter and this run has more room to develop. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled defender shooting a gap immediately at the snap, that indicates a nano blitz look which can be countered by trusting the backside cutback lane. This play struggles against stacked eight man fronts with linebackers reading run fits quickly, so avoid calling it into heavy run commit defenses without a counter tag. Look for the play side defensive end and linebacker fits, if they stay disciplined and squeeze the frontside gap, be ready to bounce the run outside off the tackle's block.
Usage Tips
Run this early in drives on first or second down to keep defenses honest and set up your PA Cross and PA Double Post shots later from the same bunch look.
Check the box count pre-snap, if you see eight defenders in the box against 11 personnel, consider audibling to a quick pass like Y Flat Quick or Z Mesh Quick instead.
Use the bunch alignment to your advantage against man coverage since the stacked receivers create natural rub potential if the defense bites on run action.
Motion is not shown here, but pairing this call with RPO Zone Peek or RPO Read Bubble in your play sequence keeps second level defenders guessing between run fits and flowing to bubble routes.
Against aggressive linebacker blitzes, trust your interior line's zone steps and hit the frontside gap quickly before the second level closes.
