Cheat Inside Zone is a zone run out of Shotgun Bunch Str Nasty that uses pre-snap motion across the formation to shift numbers before the snap and disguise the run direction. The offensive line executes a standard inside zone scheme, blocking down and working combo blocks to seal the front while the running back reads the interior gaps for the cutback lane. This is a pure run play designed to attack light boxes and gap-exchange defenders, with the primary read being the playside double team and backside cutback based on where the first level defenders flow.
Pre-snap, check if the defense shifts its front toward the bunch side after the motion, since that indicates man coverage or a scheme fit built to chase the strength. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they are sitting shallow and squared up they are reading run fits and will fill gaps quickly. Post-snap, key the playside defensive tackle and end for penetration, since a hard shoot into the backfield can blow up the zone blocking scheme. User-controlled defenders flowing hard downhill on motion are the biggest threat to this run, spy for a user linebacker cheating toward the bunch pre-snap. This run struggles against heavy blitz packages that bring extra defenders into the box, so if you see an overload blitz look, be ready to check out of it.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety down into the box, which tells you if they are keying run before the snap.
Run this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when the defense shows a light box with only six or fewer defenders inside the tackles.
If the defense stacks the box after seeing motion, consider audibling to a play-action pass like PA Cross or PA Double Post from the same set to punish overcommitted linebackers.
Pair this with RPO Zone Peek or RPO Read Bubble in your play-calling sequence so the defense cannot sit on inside zone once they see the bunch alignment and motion.
Trust your zone blocking and let the back press the hole before cutting, avoid bouncing outside too early against disciplined gap defenders.
