Breakdown

Mtn Mesh Trail is a man beater out of Shotgun Bunch Str Nasty that uses a jet motion to distort the coverage before the snap. Post snap, the two inside receivers cross underneath in a classic mesh, rubbing off man defenders while the trail receiver stacks behind the mesh for a delayed release into the void. The backside receiver runs a deep dig while the motion man works a wheel up the sideline, giving the quarterback a vertical shot if the mesh clears man coverage out of the underneath zones. Primary read progression starts with the trail route sitting behind the mesh, then works to the mesh crossers, and finally to the wheel and dig if the underneath is jumped.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the corner over the bunch shifts with the jet motion, that lateral travel confirms man coverage and tells you the mesh crossers will have room to work. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow to squat on the mesh he is vulnerable to the wheel route breaking behind him. Post-snap, key the flow of any user-controlled defender toward the mesh traffic, a lurking defender who stays home in the middle of the field can undercut both crossers and force you to the dig. Zone shells with two deep safeties and underneath defenders sinking into passing lanes will clog the mesh window, so bail to the backside dig or wheel against split safety looks. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the ideal beater since the trail and mesh combo generates a natural pick, but disciplined defenders who play through the traffic without grabbing can still recover on the trail.

Usage Tips

Check the pre-snap alignment of the cornerback over the motion man, if he follows across the formation you are facing man coverage and the mesh concept will work exactly as designed.

Use the trail route as your first read against man because the natural pick action from the mesh crossers almost always springs him open a step behind the traffic.

Against zone shells, look to hot route the trail into a shallow drag or bump the mesh depth so the crossers settle into soft spots rather than running through zone defenders.

Call this on early downs to set up Mtn Trail Fork or Corndog Trail later in the series, since the similar motion and bunch look forces the defense to declare coverage the same way each time.

Save it for third and medium situations where the mesh clears out linebackers and the wheel route from the motion man can punish a linebacker who bites on the underneath traffic.
