RPO Zone Peek is run out of Shotgun Bunch Str Nasty with 11 personnel, pairing an inside zone run with a bubble/flat combo out of the bunch look. Backside the QB has a peek read to a receiver breaking deep across the field on a post/dig style route while the bunch releases with one man working a quick flat route and another sitting on a shallow read route near the line. This is a true RPO: the primary progression is run key first (read the play side linebacker or overhang defender for the give/pull decision), then flat throw if the flat defender crashes down on the run, with the backside peek route as the explosive alternate if the defense sells out to stop the zone action.
Watch the play side linebacker depth and shuffle at the snap. If he crashes hard on the zone run action, the flat route or peek throw will be wide open. Man coverage on the bunch receivers with no bracket over the flat defender is a green light to throw hot immediately off the mesh point. Single high safety shells (Cover 1 or Cover 3) leave the backside peek route vulnerable if the corner squats on shorter routes, so scan that window as your alternate progression. Defenses that spy the QB or send a nano blitz off the edge disrupt the timing of the peek read, so be ready to tuck and take the zone run instead. Cover 2 shells with hard corners jumping the flat route shut down the quick game, forcing you to trust the inside zone blocking up front.
Check the box count pre-snap. If you have a numbers advantage in the run fit, take the inside zone give immediately.
Identify the flat defender before the snap. If he is sitting on the bunch or walked up in run support, hot route the flat man to a quick out or fade him for an easy pitch and catch.
Use the backside peek route on early downs against single high safety looks. Corners playing off man or zone drops that carry the flat leave the deep peek window open for a chunk gain.
Pair this play with Corndog Toss or Pin Pull Toss to keep defenses honest on perimeter run fits, then come back to RPO Zone Peek so the second level defenders hesitate on the mesh point.
Best used on first and second down when defenses are still guessing run versus pass. Avoid on obvious passing downs since the run element loses value.
