Mesh Spot out of Pistol Deuce Close features the classic mesh combo underneath with a corner route stretching the boundary vertically. From the diagram, the two inside receivers cross low at the same depth to create the traditional mesh point, one outside receiver runs a deep vertical corner from the boundary, another climbs to a shallow curl or hitch just past the mesh, and the backside receiver runs a flat drag across the field. This is a well known man beater because the mesh crossers naturally rub off man defenders, but it also holds up against zone since the drag and curl settle into soft spots. The primary read progression starts with the corner route as a shot on man coverage, then works down to the mesh crossers, and finishes with the drag as the checkdown.

Defensive Reads

Watch pre-snap safety alignment, a single high safety shaded away from the corner route signals man coverage and an open throwing lane on that vertical shot. Identify if linebackers are sitting in shallow zone drops before the snap, tight linebacker depth means they will jump the mesh crossers and you should work the corner or drag instead. Post-snap, look for a user controlled defender lurking underneath the mesh point, if he commits to the crossers immediately hit the drag or curl route on the opposite side. This play struggles against a hard robber concept where a linebacker or safety sits directly in the mesh area since it clogs both crossing routes at once. Cover 2 with aggressive corners can jump the drag and curl combo, so be ready to climb the ladder to the corner route against that shell if the flat defender bites on the shallow routes.

Usage Tips

Check the corner route first if you see press man or a single high safety rotated away from that side, it is a chunk play waiting to happen.

If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with deep zone drops, work the mesh crossers underneath since linebackers will struggle to stay attached through the pick action.

Use a hot route to convert the flat drag into a deeper drag or spot route against teams that squat their linebackers to jump the mesh crossers.

Call this on early downs to set up Bench or PA Boot Y Leak later in the drive since both plays attack the flat and boundary similarly and keep the defense guessing.

Against aggressive user blitzers, get the ball out on the mesh quickly since the mesh point naturally disrupts man coverage timing and forces defenders to fight through traffic.
