Mtn Counter Lt is a counter run out of the Pistol Deuce Close formation with 12 personnel, using the two in-line tight ends to create misdirection and extra beef at the point of attack. The backfield flow and pulling linemen sell one direction before the ball cuts back to the left, exploiting overaggressive linebackers and edge defenders who bite on the initial flow. This is a base run play with no play-action or pass options attached, so the primary read progression starts with the play side double team and B gap crease before working to the pulling guard's block on the second level defender.
Look for defensive ends and outside linebackers crashing hard down the line pre-snap, since overpursuit on the initial flow is exactly what this counter is designed to exploit. Identify if the defense is in a run blitz or heavy box look with eight or more defenders near the line, which can beat the counter to the point before blockers get set. Watch the play side linebacker's first step after the snap, if he reads counter quickly and flows opposite the initial line movement, the cutback lane disappears and the runner should look for a quick redirect. Check for a user controlled defender spying the backfield or sitting in the hole, since a disciplined user linebacker can blow up the counter timing by staying home instead of following the flow. Base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with linebackers reading run late are the best matchups for this play, while nickel and dime packages with fast slot defenders squeezing gaps tend to shut it down.
Run this early in a series to establish tendencies before mixing in Cheat Counter Y or Counter Y as complementary looks that attack different gaps with similar flow.
Check the linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are sitting tight to the line in a run blitz alignment, this play can get stuffed before the pull develops, so consider bouncing to HB Stretch or HB Dive instead.
Use the fullback or extra tight end lead blocker to identify the first unblocked defender and let your running back set up the block off his hip rather than forcing the crease.
Ideal on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium yardage, when defenses are more likely to sit in base personnel instead of nickel or dime sub packages.
Pair this with Mtn PA Flood or PA Boot Y Leak later in a drive so the play-action off similar formation flow keeps linebackers honest and slows their downhill trigger on the counter.
