Defensive Reads

Read the flow of the linebackers first, if they bite hard on the run fake the intermediate route will come open in the vacated zone almost immediately Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high Cover 3 is where this flood concept does the most damage because the deep third defender cannot cover all three levels Watch for the cornerback on the flood side, if he sinks deep and passes off underneath routes to a linebacker that linebacker becomes the key defender to beat with the intermediate throw Beware of Cover 2 with an aggressive user controlled safety jumping the deep route, if the safety flies to the flood side immediately look to the backside checkdown or drag Against man blitz looks with no deep help, the flat route wins fast, but a well timed nano blitz can collapse the pocket before the flood routes fully develop so protect the edges with the tight ends

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs when the defense is keying run based on personnel and formation tendencies since 12 personnel in Pistol screams run to most defenders

Check the defensive alignment before the snap, if you see two deep safeties rotating hard to one side pre-snap this flood concept can get you an explosive gain to the opposite hash

Hot route the backside tight end into a quick drag or spot route as a checkdown against man coverage looks since the flood side alone will not beat tight man unless you get a natural pick

Pair this call with Mtn Counter Lt and HB Stretch earlier in a series so the play-action fake carries real weight and linebackers start cheating up before you dial up the flood shot

Best used on second and medium or first down to stay ahead of the chains, avoid third and long situations where the play-action fake loses its run threat credibility
