Y Lead Read Option is a run play out of Pistol Deuce Close (12 personnel) that puts the QB in a zone read look with the HB offset behind him. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme to the play side while the read-option mechanic has the QB reading the backside end man on the line before deciding to hand off or pull and keep. This is a pure run concept, not a play-action or RPO, and the diagram shows no route combos, just the run action and blocking assignments with the read key on the edge defender.
Defensive Reads
Watch the backside defensive end or outside linebacker pre-snap since that is the exact player the QB reads for the give or keep decision. If the defense shows a crashing edge defender who squeezes hard down the line, expect the QB to pull and attack the alley, so user your flow linebacker to fill outside quickly. Stacked fronts with a linebacker sitting directly over the read key can shut this down by giving the defense a spy on both the dive and the keep in one motion. Look for safeties cheating down into the box pre-snap, which signals run support and should tip the offense toward the pass options in this playbook instead. Nickel and dime packages with lighter boxes are more vulnerable here, so if you see six or fewer men in the box post-snap, fit your linebackers fast to avoid a explosive gain on the perimeter.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the run fit.
Identify whether the defense is playing a base 4-3 or 3-4 front since the read defender changes based on who is the unblocked edge player.
Use your QB's speed rating to determine how aggressive you can be pulling the ball versus just handing off, since a slower QB should default to the give more often.
Run this on early downs in 1st and 10 or 2nd and short situations to keep the defense honest and set up your play-action shots later in the drive.
Pair this with HB Dive and Inside Zone Split from the same set so the defense sees identical backfield action and cannot key the mesh point, then hit them with PA Boot Y Leak once they start crashing down on the run fake.
