Inside Zone Split lines up out of Pistol Deuce Close with 12 personnel, showing tight formation strength to one side for double tight end zone blocking. The diagram shows the offensive line stepping in unison with the HB taking a direct downhill path off the QB mesh point, hitting the interior gap created by the zone combo up front. This is a base zone run play, not a play-action or RPO look, and the primary read is the frontside A gap to backside cutback lane depending on how the defensive line flows and where the linebackers fill.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check safety depth, if a safety is creeping down near the line expect an extra run fitter and a tougher interior gap to crack. Watch the middle linebacker's alignment, a stacked or shaded Mike often signals a fast downhill fill that can be exploited with a cutback if he overpursues. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra run support usually means creases open up quickly, this play beats light boxes and single high shells well. Cover 2 or Cover 3 shells with the safety rotating down into the box are the toughest matchup since it adds a hat to every gap. Post-snap, key the defensive tackles and edge defenders, if they get vertical push and collapse the frontside A gap, look for the backside cutback lane instead of forcing the play into a clogged hole.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs, especially first and ten or second and short, to stay ahead of the sticks and set up play-action later in the series. Check the box count before the snap: if the defense shows six or more in the box, consider audibling to a perimeter run or checking to a quick pass instead. Use the RB's natural vision, let the zone develop, and manually control the HB to press the frontside hole before cutting back if the backside is unblocked. Pair this play with PA Boot Y Leak and PA Z Over from the same set so the defense has to respect run action out of the identical Pistol Deuce Close look. Against aggressive defensive tackles crashing hard down the line, bounce to the cutback since interior zone blocking will seal them inside.
