Breakdown

Counter Y out of Pistol Deuce Close is a gap-scheme power run that pulls the backside guard and TE to lead through the point of attack while the frontside line down blocks to create a wall. The diagram shows both TEs tight to the formation with no receivers split out, an alignment built purely to overload the box for the counter action. This is a run play with no pass option attached, so the primary read is the frontside double team and puller path: the HB reads the down blocks first, then keys the lead blocker to decide between bouncing outside or cutting up through the wash created by the counter trap.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebackers who flow hard to the initial step of the offensive line since disciplined defenders who sit and read the counter action will blow this play up before the puller gets there. Stacked boxes with 4-3 or 46 fronts can struggle against Counter Y because the double team and pulling TE create dedicated double teams at the point of attack, but a defense with two gap-sound linebackers reading run keys can close the cutback lane fast. Pre-snap, check safety depth and count the box: if the defense has 7 or more in the box already, this play still works but only if your lead blocker wins his matchup, so know your personnel matchups against blitz heavy calls. Nano blitzes and A gap pressure can disrupt the counter timing before the puller arrives, so recognize any defender lined up head up on the center or immediately shooting a gap pre-snap. User-controlled defenders spying the backfield or sitting in the hole are the biggest threat to this concept since they can read the counter step and jump the play, so mix in play action from this same personnel to keep them honest.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the box count before the snap since Deuce Close with 12 personnel invites defenses to stack the box, and Counter Y is built to punish exactly that.

Run this on early downs or short yardage when you need a decisive gap scheme play rather than a zone read, since the pulling guard and TE give you a clear hole if the defense bites on the initial line flow.

Pair Counter Y with HB Dive or Inside Zone Split from the same set so linebackers cannot key the counter action off tendency, forcing them to respect straight ahead runs first.

Watch for a fast flowing linebacker crashing down immediately at the snap, that is your cue to bounce the run outside since the counter misdirection should leave him out of position.

If you see a heavy safety cheat down into the box pre-snap, consider checking to Cheat Counter Y or PA Boot Y Leak instead to attack the vacated space behind the blitz look.
