Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, if the Mike and Will are sitting shallow and stacked tight to the line they are likely keying run and will fill the dive lane fast. This play struggles against heavy 4-3 or 46 fronts with extra defenders in the box, since the interior gaps get clogged before the HB can build momentum. It beats light boxes and nickel or dime packages that sub out run defenders for coverage, giving the HB a clean crease through the middle. Post-snap, key the defensive tackles' first step, if they are shooting gaps aggressively on a designed run blitz the dive can get blown up before the mesh point finishes. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the backfield, since a smart user Mike linebacker sitting on the dive read can jump the play and cut off the primary lane, forcing the back to cut early.
Usage Tips
Use this play on short yardage or 2nd/3rd and short situations where defenses expect a quick hitting run and you need positive yardage without exposing the ball to negative plays. Check the box count pre-snap: if you see 7 or more defenders stacked in the box, consider audibling to a play-action pass in this set like PA Boot Y Leak to punish the aggressive front. Pair this play with HB Dive and Inside Zone Split in your call sheet to keep defenders guessing between one-back dive concepts and zone stretch, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits. Take control of the HB immediately after the snap and trust your line, avoid trying to bounce this outside the tackle box since the blocking scheme is designed for a tight interior hit. Run this on early downs to set up Counter Y or Cheat Counter Y later in the series once linebackers start flowing hard to stop the dive.
