HB Zone out of Pistol Bunch TE is a pure inside zone run play with the RB aligned behind the QB in the pistol. The diagram shows the three bunch receivers and the isolated receiver running off the defense with no route assignments drawn, meaning this is a run-only concept with zone blocking rules up front rather than an RPO or play-action look. The primary read for the ball carrier is a backside to frontside zone progression, pressing the line and reading the first down lineman past the center before deciding whether to bend the run into the B gap or bounce it outside based on how the front flows.
Watch the linebacker depth pre-snap: stacked linebackers within four yards of the line signal a run blitz that can blow up inside zone before it develops. Identify the strong safety alignment, since a safety cheating into the box removes the numbers advantage this run scheme needs to succeed. Post-snap, key the defensive line's gap discipline, a shooting gap linebacker or user-controlled defender crashing the mesh point is the biggest threat to this concept. Zone fronts that stay disciplined in their gaps and squeeze the line will hold this play to minimal gains, forcing the back to search for a cutback. Look for backside pursuit from the defensive end, if he stays home instead of crashing, the backside cutback lane closes and the run should be pressed to the frontside.
Use HB Zone on early downs in normal or run heavy personnel situations when you want to stay ahead of the chains without tipping your hand. Check the box count before the snap: if the defense has six or fewer defenders in the box, this play has a numbers advantage and should hit quickly. Take control of the fullback or lead blocker if available and manually seal the first threat to the play side to open a bigger lane. Pair this with HB Dive and HB Counter from the same set so the defense cannot key on one blocking scheme, then mix in Speed Option or Jet Touch Pass to hold the edge defenders honest. Against aggressive linebackers who crash hard on run keys, use a cutback lane by pressing the hole longer before committing to a direction.
