HB Draw out of Pistol Bunch TE shows a bunch alignment to one side with the QB in pistol and the HB set behind him. At the snap the offensive line sells pass protection before releasing into their draw blocking assignments, opening a lane up the middle for the HB to hit once the QB fakes the drop and hands off. This is a pure run play designed to bait aggressive pass rushers and blitzing linebackers upfield, and the read progression for the ball carrier is to press the line of scrimmage, read the mike linebacker's flow, then cut to whichever gap the interior blocking opens.
Watch for user blitzers flying upfield off the edge, since the draw blocking scheme is designed to let them overrun the play and create the cutback lane. Key the mike linebacker's initial step: if he drops into coverage or flows hard to the play fake, the middle of the field opens up for the HB. This play struggles against a spy technique or a linebacker sitting in a shallow hole zone, since that defender stays home and clogs the draw lane immediately. Look for nickel or dime packages with light boxes, as an extra DB in the box can fill the run fit faster than a base defense. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with linebackers reading run keys through the line, this play loses its explosive potential because the second level defenders do not bite on the pass fake.
Call this on passing downs like 2nd or 3rd and long when the defense is showing blitz or an aggressive four man rush look.
Check the linebacker depth pre-snap: if they are creeping up expecting pass rush lanes, this play punishes them hard once they flow upfield.
Pair HB Draw with Cross Drag or Stick from this same set so the bunch formation and pistol alignment look identical, forcing the defense to respect both run and pass before the snap.
Avoid calling this against disciplined zone teams that keep linebackers gap sound and read run first, since they will scrape down quickly and clog the interior lanes.
Use play action shots like PA Curls or Verticals earlier in a drive to condition the defense to bite on pass, making the draw hit even harder later in the game.
