Strong Power out of Pistol Bunch TE is a gap scheme power run that pulls the backside guard to lead through the strong side hole while the offensive line down blocks to seal the point of attack. The HB takes a lead step from the pistol alignment and follows the puller through the designated gap, reading the down blocks up front for the crease. This is a run play designed to win with numbers at the point of attack rather than beating man or zone coverage, so the primary read is the pulling guard, then the play side alley for the first crack of daylight.
Defensive Reads
As the defense, key the pulling guard immediately at the snap since that is the ball carrier's primary indicator for which gap he is hitting. Stack the box with a linebacker or safety in run support to outnumber the blockers at the point of attack, this is the single best counter to gap power schemes. Watch for the fullback or lead blocker's angle, if he is climbing outside the tackle box the run is bouncing wide rather than staying interior. User a linebacker and spy the backside cutback lane, ball carriers will bounce here if the frontside gets clogged. Против bunch formations, assign a defender to hold the edge and refuse to bite on flow, since bunch sets are used to disguise both run direction and misdirection concepts.
Usage Tips
Run this out of Pistol Bunch TE when the defense shows a light box with six or fewer defenders, since the bunch alignment forces defenders to declare their run fits late.
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into flowing early, which opens the crease for the pulling guard.
Pair Strong Power with HB Dive and HB Zone from the same set so the defense cannot key on the pulling guard action alone.
On early downs this is a great base run to establish tempo and set up PA Curls or Cross Drag later once linebackers start cheating downhill.
If the defense shows heavy blitz pressure off the edge, hot route the TE to a quick chip block or switch to Speed Option to punish overaggressive fits.
