Cover 2 Man is the base man-under, two-deep shell out of the 3-3 Over Nickel package. The two deep safeties rotate to split the field and cap any vertical shots while five underneath defenders (the three linebackers and two cornerbacks/nickel) lock in man coverage on their assigned receivers, with the outside corners squeezing releases toward the safety help. This is a defensive coverage call, not an offensive concept, and it is designed to shut down man beater route combos (slants, digs, drags) by combining physical man technique underneath with a two-deep safety net over the top. Primary defensive assignment progression starts with the deep half safeties reading quarterback eyes for the deep ball, then working down to their man responsibilities if the play stays underneath.

Use pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or nickel to match, confirming true man coverage before the snap
Pair this with Cover 2 Roll and Cover 2 Invert in the same set so offenses cannot key on safety rotation and are forced to guess between man and zone shells
Mix in Cover 1 LB Blitz and Edge Blitz 0 from this same playbook to disguise the two-deep look presnap and bring pressure when the offense expects coverage
User the deep safety toward the strong side receiver on early downs to jump comeback and post routes that man corners tend to give up underneath the safety help
