The cornerback stays outside and sinks under any vertical route while the safety rotates over the top, giving you a hard flat and curl combo underneath to squeeze the boundary against quick game and pick plays. This is a zone beater killer against flat and comeback routes, and the primary read progression starts with the flat defender to identify the cloud rotation, then works to the deep third safety before checking the underneath curl to hook zone for late developing crossers.

Defensive Reads

Watch the strong side cornerback presnap alignment since a tight press look with outside leverage signals the cloud rotation is coming to that side. Post snap, key the flat defender first because he squats hard on any speed out or quick hitch, which tells you the flat and curl combo is locked down and you need to attack the opposite hash. Identify the deep third safety rotation quickly since a slow rotating safety leaves the deep middle vulnerable to a seam route or skinny post from the weak side. Use this on early down and distance situations where you expect a quick game passing attack, since the cloud corner takes away hitches, quick outs, and bubble screens to the boundary.

Motion a receiver across formation presnap to force the defense to declare whether they are rotating the cloud to the new strength, which lets you diagnose real coverage before the snap.

Blitz timing from the weak side linebacker can create a soft spot in the underneath zone, so combine this with Sim Pressure 3 or Edge Blitz 3 later in a series to disguise pressure while staying in a similar shell.
