Breakdown

Pounder is a Cover 3 based zone blitz look out of the Nickel 4-2-5 personnel in the 3-3 Over set, designed to disguise pressure while still dropping enough defenders to cover the deep thirds and underneath zones. The front sends a designed blitzer off the edge or through an interior gap while the remaining linebackers and secondary rotate into a sky or buzz style zone shell to protect against quick throws. The primary read for the defense is to identify whether the quarterback is attacking the vacated underneath zone with a hot route or check down before the rush arrives, since the play lives and dies on winning the down and distance battle with pressure timing.

Defensive Reads

Watch for the offensive line sliding protection toward your blitz side, which tells you the quarterback has identified the pressure and may be scripted to beat it with a quick out or slant. Key the running back release out of the backfield, since check downs into the vacated underneath zone are the primary counter to this blitz. If the offense shows four verticals or a deep crossing concept, trust your zone drops to sink and match rather than jumping routes too early. Watch the tight end or slot receiver for option routes that sit down in the hole created by the blitz, since this is the classic man beater answer to Pounder. Against play-action heavy offenses, be disciplined with your run fits before committing the extra rusher, since Pounder can be exploited by counter or misdirection runs if the blitzer overcommits.

Usage Tips

Use Pounder on early downs or obvious run downs when the offense is likely to take a shot down the field, since the blitz timing punishes deep drop back protection schemes.

Pre-snap, check the offensive formation for empty backfield or trips looks that could expose your rotating zone shell to quick underneath throws.

Mix in Cover 3 Match or Cover 3 Sky from this same set after running Pounder so the offense cannot key on your leverage or blitz path based on initial alignment.

User the second level defender closest to the blitz gap to act as a spy or lurk defender if you suspect the quarterback will scramble or check it down immediately.

Pair Pounder with Cover 1 LB Blitz in your play call sequence to keep the quarterback guessing between man pressure and zone pressure looks from the same personnel package.
