Breakdown

FS Will Blitz 0 is a Cover 0 zero blitz out of the 3-3 Over Nickel front that brings the free safety and the Will linebacker off the edge to overload the offensive line. The diagram shows five defenders converging with red arrows into the box, all crashing toward the same gaps to collapse the pocket immediately, while every remaining defender is locked in man coverage with no deep help. Since there is zero safety help over the top, this is a pure man beater killer designed to win with speed and numbers before the quarterback can find his outlet, and the primary read progression is simply get to the quarterback first because the coverage behind it is live for a big play if the rush does not connect in time.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the offense has a running back or tight end who can chip and release quickly, since that is the outlet that beats zero blitz almost every time. Watch for bunch or stack formations, since rub routes and natural picks against man coverage with no safety help are the biggest counter to this call. Post-snap, get eyes on the quarterback's first movement. If he is climbing the pocket or spinning out, your rushers need to stay in their lanes rather than overrunning the play. This call gets shut down by quick game concepts like slants and hitches that beat man coverage before the extra rushers arrive, so expect it to struggle against three step drops. It wins big against offenses that call deep shot plays or slow developing route combos, since the coverage cannot hold up that long without help over the top.

Usage Tips

Call this on third and long or in obvious passing situations where the offense is likely to run a five or seven step drop, since the extra rushers need time to work.

Check the offensive personnel and formation pre-snap. If you see stacked or bunched receivers that can create natural rub routes, consider audibling out since your corners have no help against pick concepts.

Use your user-controlled defender on the most dangerous route runner or the running back in man coverage, since a leaked back out of the backfield is the easiest answer to a zero blitz.

Mix this in after showing Cover 1 LB Blitz or Edge Blitz 0 from the same set so quarterbacks cannot key on your pressure tendencies from splits or depth alone.

Avoid calling this on obvious screen downs, since the aggressive downhill rush leaves defenders out of position if the offense bounces outside.
