This is Tampa 2 out of the 3-3 Over Nickel package, a zone coverage shell built to take away the deep middle while still funneling everything underneath. The two deep safeties bail into deep half responsibilities while the middle linebacker (the olive dot) sprints vertically down the seam to rob the deep post and act as the third deep defender in the middle third. Underneath, the two outside corners sink into flat zones (teal), the two inside linebackers on the gray dots hold curl to flat zones, and the nickel/corner press assignments funnel receivers toward the sideline. This is a zone beater deterrent play designed to shut down deep crossers and post routes over the middle, with the primary defensive read progression being the Mike linebacker's seam drop first, then working outward to the flat zones for anything checked down short.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth: if both safeties are sitting at 10 to 12 yards with no rotation shown, that is your Tampa 2 tell and receivers running deep outs or corner routes into the flat defenders will be there for the taking by the offense, so as the defender you want to disguise this look as long as possible. Post-snap, key the Mike linebacker's seam drop, if he gets beat vertically by a tight end or slot receiver with speed, that is the single biggest hole in this coverage. This shell shuts down four verticals and deep post routes cold because of the extra deep middle defender, but it is vulnerable to quick game and RPO throws underneath before the linebackers reach their zone drop depth. Watch for user-controlled defenders lurking the shallow crossers, a good user Mike linebacker can jump inside slants or drag routes that the AI would otherwise let through. Man beater route combos with immediate breaks (quick outs, hitches) exploit the cushion corners are playing before they sink into their flat zones, so if the offense is hurrying the snap look for this exploit.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect the offense to attack the deep middle with posts, verticals, or dig routes.

Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running four verticals or a deep crosser combo, since Tampa 2 is specifically designed to bracket that Mike linebacker seam drop against those routes.

Use this play in sequence with Cover 2 Invert or Cover 2 Roll to disguise your shell, since all three start with a similar two deep safety look before rotating differently.

If you are worried about a burner tight end or slot receiver sitting down in the deep middle hole behind the Mike, consider hot routing that linebacker to widen his drop or spy the underneath crosser instead.

Avoid calling this against heavy run personnel on early downs since the underneath zone drops can be slow to react to power runs, pair it instead with Cover 3 Buzz Mable if you expect run first looks.
