Breakdown

Edge Blitz 3 is a five man pressure package out of the Nickel 3-3 Over front that brings edge rushers off both the strong and weak side while dropping into a Cover 3 shell behind it. Up front, the defensive line runs a stunt with crossing paths (X's crisscrossing at the snap) designed to confuse blocking assignments and collapse the pocket quickly, while the middle linebacker spies or scrapes underneath. On the back end, the two outside cornerbacks and the deep safety carry vertical zone drops to protect the deep thirds, with the slot corner and strong safety spinning down into short zone drops to take away quick hitters. This is a zone based blitz beater against the run and a pressure look designed to disrupt the quarterback's timing before he can attack the deep middle.

Defensive Reads

Presnap, check the safety alignment: two high safeties often mean the offense is prepared for zone coverage underneath and may try to attack the flats where your drops are thinnest. Watch the running back's alignment, because if he stays in to chip or block the edge rusher, your pressure will be delayed and you need to trust the zone drops longer. Postsnap, key the quarterback's eyes to the strong side flat, since the crossing stunt can open a gap that a smart quarterback will exploit with a quick out or flare route. This beats teams that rely on deep shot plays and slow developing man beaters, but struggles against quick game spread concepts and RPOs that get the ball out before the stunt develops. Look for the offense to counter with hot routes on slot receivers into the shallow zone bubble left by the blitzing linebackers, so be ready to user a defender into that space.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect a drop back pass, since the deep thirds behind the blitz protect you against big plays over the top.

Pre-snap, identify if the offense has a max protect look or extra blockers, because the edge stunt can get picked up easily if both tackles and a back stay in to block.

User the middle linebacker in his zone drop so you can jump underneath crossing routes or quick outs that offenses use to beat zone blitzes.

Pair Edge Blitz 3 with Cover 3 Cloud or Cover 3 Sky earlier in a series so the offense sees a similar shell and cannot key on the blitz just from your alignment.

Avoid calling this against empty formations or heavy shotgun spread sets where the quarterback can get the ball out fast, since the edge rushers need time to convert speed to power.
