Cover 1 Hole is a man coverage shell out of the 3-3 Over Nickel front that puts five defenders in press or trail man technique underneath while stacking a deep middle safety over the top and a hole defender sitting in the intermediate middle zone. Disguise this look by aligning like a standard Cover 1 or Cover 3 pre snap, then rotate the hole defender late to bait quarterbacks into throwing into a robbed window.

Pair this call with Cover 1 Robber and Cover 1 LB Blitz in the same game plan so quarterbacks cannot key on hole defender depth or blitzer identity presnap.

User the deep middle safety if you expect a vertical shot down the seam or post, since your five underneath defenders are locked in man and need the safety help over the top.

Avoid this play against heavy four verticals or trips concepts that flood one side, since the hole defender can get isolated if he has to widen out of his zone.
