Safety Strong 3 is a Cover 3 zone blitz look out of the 3-3 Over Nickel front, dropping into a three deep, four under shell. Both outside cornerbacks sink vertically into deep thirds while the deep safety cross-key drop holds the middle third, and the underneath zone is a jumble of blitzers and short defenders: two of the three interior rushers attack straight downhill off the snap while the SAM/OLB flares out to wall off the flat. This is a zone pressure package built to disguise where the extra rusher comes from while still keeping three deep defenders over the top, so it is a strong zone beater against slower developing man beater route combos and scramble drills, but it is vulnerable to quick hitters into the vacated underneath void created by the blitzing linebackers.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and cornerback alignment, if the corners are playing off with a deep safety split evenly, the offense likely sees three deep zone coming and may attack the shallow underneath void with quick game. Watch for trips or bunch formations to the strong side, since the extra blitzer creates a numbers disadvantage in the flat if receivers release quickly into that vacated zone. Post-snap, track the two interior rushers hitting downhill immediately, if the quarterback has a quick game answer like a stick or flat route timed to that pressure, this call gets exposed for a big gain. This shell shuts down deep shot plays and slow developing man beater combos since three defenders stay deep, but it struggles against RPOs and screen game that attack the space vacated by blitzing linebackers. Look for the deep safety cross-key drop to the middle third, if the quarterback holds the ball and looks off the corner routes, that safety can close hard on any receiver breaking into his zone.
Usage Tips
Use Safety Strong 3 on early downs or obvious passing situations where you expect the offense to take a deep shot, since the three deep defenders take away verticals while the pressure disrupts timing.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is in a spread set with three or more receivers to one side, since the underneath defenders can get outleveraged if the blitz timing does not line up with route depth.
Show the same Nickel 4-2-5 personnel and pre-snap look as Cover 3 Match or Cover 3 Sky before the snap so quarterbacks cannot key the extra rusher off formation alone.
Mix this call with Cover 2 Invert or Cover 6 Willie on the following snap to keep the quarterback guessing between three deep zone pressure and two deep shells after showing the same personnel group.
User the flowing SAM defender in the flat to jump underneath quick outs or flares, since the AI alone will not always get enough depth to close on shallow crossers before the ball arrives.
