Nickel Sim 2 is a simulated pressure package out of the 3-3 Over Nickel front that shows a five man look before dropping into a two deep shell underneath. The diagram shows three defenders rushing off the edges and interior gaps (red arrows) while three defenders in the box drop into short zone spots (white boxes) and the two deep safeties rotate over the top into Cover 2. On the outside, both cornerbacks click and close on the receivers with man leverage, while the slot defenders read and react, making this a zone beater disguised as a blitz that punishes offenses who audible into hot throws expecting five or six man pressure. The primary read progression for the defense is: identify if the QB is throwing hot to the flat or slot first, then trigger the underneath zone defenders to squeeze the throwing lanes while the deep safeties eliminate anything over the top.
Pre-snap, key the safety depth and alignment, if both safeties are showing deep halves before the snap the offense may suspect Cover 2 and adjust routes accordingly, so disguise is critical. Post-snap, watch the underneath defenders sink into their zone drop spots immediately rather than chasing receivers, since their job is to rob intermediate crossers and hot routes. This shell is effective against RPOs and quick game because the interior rush disrupts the running lane while the underneath zone eliminates the bubble screen or slant throw options. It struggles against deep double moves or corner routes into the seam if the deep safeties bite on shorter route stems, so watch for user rushers getting home too fast and creating one on one matchups deep. Beware of running back leak outs or check downs against this look, since only three true rushers are attacking, a smart QB can find the leaking back before the underneath defenders reset their zone.
Disguise this play by showing blitz pre-snap with the three down linemen and outside backers walked up to the line, then bail into the two deep shell just before the snap to bait the QB into a bad hot read.
Use this against offenses that love quick game and hot routes versus perceived pressure, since the underneath defenders are sitting on those exact throwing lanes.
Mix this call in after running Edge Blitz 0 or Edge Blitz 3 earlier in the series so the offense respects five or six man pressure and keeps throwing into the same spots this sim look defends.
On third and short or third and medium, this is a great changeup call because the offense expects max protection blitz beaters, but the zone drop underneath takes those away.
Pair this with Cover 2 Invert or Cover 2 Roll in your play-calling sequence so the pre-snap safety look stays consistent and the offense cannot key on formation tells alone.
