This is a pure run play with no route concept, designed to attack the interior of the defense using power and gap integrity rather than finesse or misdirection. The primary read progression is simple: the halfback keys the fullback's block and picks the crease off his lead, hitting the hole as soon as it opens rather than dancing behind the line.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box defenders. A stacked box with eight or more defenders is the biggest red flag against this play since the interior gaps will be clogged immediately. Watch linebacker depth before the snap. Linebackers sitting shallow and square to the line are reading run and will fill the dive lane fast, while linebackers backed off or shaded to a side create a bigger initial crease. Post-snap, key the fullback's block. If the user controlled defender crashes down hard on the fullback's lead block, the play can get blown up at the mesh point before the halfback even gets vertical. This play struggles against inside blitzes and A gap pressure since there is no answer built into the play design to handle penetration, so avoid calling it into obvious run blitz looks or bunched fronts. It beats light boxes and defenses playing base personnel that are not sold out on stopping the run between the tackles, especially when the defense has shown zone toss or stretch tendencies on prior snaps.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs in short yardage or when you need a positive gain to stay ahead of the sticks, since it is a north south gap runner and not a home run hitter.
Check the defensive front pre-snap. If the defense is in a light box with only six or fewer defenders in the box, this play has favorable numbers and should hit quickly.
Send the fullback's lead block into the play and trust the initial hole rather than trying to bounce it outside, since HB Lead Dive is designed to win with downhill decisiveness, not lateral movement.
Pair this with HB Zone Toss or HB Stretch earlier in a series to get the defense flowing laterally, then come back to HB Lead Dive to punish linebackers who are over pursuing to the edge.
