Zone Wk is an inside zone run out of the I Form Close 21 personnel package, featuring a fullback and single TE tight to the formation for extra gap integrity. The offensive line executes a weak side zone blocking scheme, flowing down and combo blocking to seal the front side while the FB leads through the hole to pick off the first threat to the ball carrier's path. The HB reads the blocking flow and picks his gap based on the defensive line's leverage, with the primary read progression being the frontside combo blocks into the backside cutback lane if the defense overpursues.
Pre-snap, count the box defenders. Anything under seven in the box favors the offense on this inside zone concept. Watch linebacker depth. Linebackers sitting shallow at four yards or less can be user controlled to shoot the gap and blow up the FB lead block. Key the defensive line's gap alignment. If the DL is in a heavy shade toward the play side, the cutback lane backside becomes the primary breakaway lane. Safeties rotating down pre-snap signal run support, so a user controlled safety filling the alley can cut off the cutback before it develops. This run struggles against gap or odd fronts with a stacked nose and edge defenders staying home, since the initial gaps get clogged and the FB lead block loses its angle.
Run this on early downs in normal or base personnel situations where the defense has not committed extra defenders to the box.
Check the defensive front pre-snap. Zone Wk hits best against 4-3 and 3-4 base fronts without a stacked box or extra safety creeping down.
Use motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into flowing hard so you can identify cutback lanes before the snap even happens.
Pair this play with HB Counter Wk and Power O in your playcalling sequence so defenders cannot key run direction based on backfield action alone.
If the defense shows a heavy box with eight or more defenders, kill this play at the line and check to PA Boot Flow or PA Deep Read to attack vacated coverage instead.
