PA Throwback out of I Form Close (21 personnel) uses a play-action fake to sell the run before working the backside of the field. Defensive Reads
Watch for linebackers stepping up hard on the run fake, that flow opens the throwback lane directly behind them. A single high safety alignment pre-snap suggests man coverage underneath, which is exactly what the throwback route is designed to punish. If the defense shows two deep safeties and stays disciplined post-snap, the vertical routes on the play side may be taken away, forcing a check down to the fullback release. User linebackers who sit and read the quarterback instead of committing to the run fake can undercut the throwback route, so pump fake or manipulate with eyes before throwing. Cover 3 or Cover 1 with an aggressive blitz package can be beaten if the throwback route clears the underneath zone before the blitz arrives, but delayed timing against a well-timed blitz can result in a sack if the fake holds too long.
Usage Tips
Sell the run fake fully before committing to the throwback read, since linebackers and safeties biting on the play action open the window for the crosser.
Use this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when defenses expect run out of I Form personnel, since the play action carries more weight in those situations.
Check the backside safety pre-snap, if he stays flat footed on the run fake instead of rotating, the throwback route will have a clean throwing lane.
Pair this with HB Zone Toss or HB Lead Dive earlier in a series so the defense keys run fits, then punish overaggressive linebackers with the throwback route.
If the defense shows heavy man coverage indicators like a single high safety with corners in press, prioritize the throwback route on the initial read since it exploits man leverage immediately off the snap.
