Defensive Reads
Watch for linebacker depth at the snap, since shallow or aggressive linebackers who crash toward the line on run action leave the wheel route wide open against man coverage. Identify single high safety looks pre-snap, as Cover 1 and Cover 3 shells with man principles on the HB are the most exploitable coverage for this concept. Cover 2 or Cover 4 zone shells with disciplined linebacker drops can shut this down by having a defender sink into the flat to wall off the wheel route early. User a linebacker or nickel defender to spy the HB out of the backfield if you suspect this play, since a lurking defender can jump the wheel route or the shallow crosser depending on drop depth. Watch the TE or FB crossing route timing post-snap, since blitzing linebackers who vacate their zone assignments create natural throwing lanes for the deep crosser before the wheel route even develops.
Usage Tips
Sell the play action fake fully by holding the animation before looking downfield, since defenders keying run flow will bite hard on this look from I Form personnel.
Check pre-snap for man coverage indicators like corners lined up tight on receivers or linebackers shading toward the HB, since this play struggles against zone shells with underneath defenders sitting on crossing routes.
Hot route the shallow crosser into a deeper option or drag it across if you see a linebacker spy sitting in the middle of the field.
